Guang Yang is a composer, pianist, writer and educator currently based in Davis, California. His music grows out of lived encounters with sound: its resonance, textural nuance, and moments of ephemerality. His work is often shaped by aesthetic traditions from other art forms, including poetry, Chinese calligraphy, and ink-wash painting.

Guang’s compositions have been performed by esteemed ensembles and musicians, including the Euclid String Quartet, Da Capo Chamber Players, Zhejiang Conservatory Ensemble, The Orchestra Now, Bard Conservatory Orchestra, Dogs of Desire (Albany Symphony), Transient Canvas, Sound Icon, the Rhythm Method Quartet, and the Mivos Quartet. He has collaborated with notable conductors such as Leon Botstein, Jeffrey Means, and David Alan Miller. His works have been showcased in the United States, China, and Italy at renowned venues including the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Arthur Zankel Music Center, Bito Conservatory Space, Yuhang Grand Theatre, Bush Memorial Hall, Ann E. Pitzer Center and others.

Guang has received commissions from organizations such as the Zhejiang Conservatory Ensemble, Yuhang Grand Theatre, The Characters, and Radio Zhejiang Choir. As an active performer, he has held numerous piano recitals in various venues, featuring both traditional repertoire and his own compositions.

Guang’s achievements have been recognized with numerous prizes and honors, including the Margaret Creal Shafer Prize in Composition from the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle, the “Excellent Work” Award at the 2022 Soundways International Composition Competition, and First Prize at the Malta International Composition Competition. He is also a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society (Alpha Kappa Chapter). Guang studied at Bard College and Boston University under the mentorship of Lera Auerbach, George Tsontakis and Joshua Fineberg.
